Labiaplasty is an outpatient surgical procedure designed to reduce and sculpt the length of the labia minora and can relieve symptoms women experience from twisting and tugging of the labia. The main reasons for choosing labiaplasty is discomfort and esthetics. Many women are born with large or irregular labia, in some cases protruding, causing local irritation, hygiene complications, interference with intercourse, or discomfort during physical activity, such as cycling or running. Labial enlargement can also occur after childbirth which may be present on one or both sides.
The procedure causes some discomfort and is performed under general anesthesia. Most patients take a week off of work to heal and can resume exercise, sexual intercourse, and the use of tampons within approximately six weeks.
